Basic Practices: Healthy Skin

Healthy skin doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it begins with simple routines, nourishing ingredients, and learning how to care for your skin with intention.

Many of you — just like me — begin your skincare journey only knowing a handful of techniques for maintaining healthy skin… or not even fully knowing what “healthy skin” means in the first place.

So, let’s decode it together. 💛

One thing I’ve learned while researching skincare is that dermatologists’ recommendations usually aren’t nearly as scary or demanding as we may assume. Healthy skin doesn’t always require a complicated 15-step routine or overflowing bathroom shelves.

In fact, many professionals consistently recommend starting with the basics:

Simple. Intentional. Consistent.

So… where should you start?

Think of your skincare routine as building a small support system for your skin.

At its most basic level, your routine only needs:

  • a cleanser

  • any treatments specific to your skin’s needs

  • and a protector/moisturizer to help seal everything in — like Bare Bear. ✨

That’s it.

Healthy skin often begins with simple, consistent cleansing — a small daily act that helps remove buildup while giving your skin a fresh start.

Cleansing Your Skin

Cleansing helps remove dirt, excess oil, bacteria, sweat, and buildup from the skin.

For your body, this may look like choosing soaps or cleansers with ingredients that support your skin’s specific needs. But when it comes to your face, facial cleansers are typically formulated differently than body soaps because facial skin is more delicate and has its own pH balance.

According to The Ordinary, modern facial cleansers are designed to gently remove dirt, oil, and makeup without completely stripping the skin of its natural oils.

And not all cleansers are created equal! Different skin types often benefit from different textures and formulations.

Some common cleanser types include:

  • gel cleansers

  • cream cleansers

  • foaming cleansers

  • clay cleansers

  • oil cleansers

  • cleansing balms

  • exfoliating cleansers

(Thank you to Moon Juice for helping break these down so simply!)

And honestly? One day, Teddy Bare Body may offer a full lineup of cleansers for Barebabes to explore. 👀
Maybe sooner than you think.

Treatments: Addressing Your Skin’s Unique Needs

Treatments are products specifically designed to target concerns your skin may be experiencing.

This could include concerns like:

  • dryness

  • acne

  • uneven texture

  • dark spots

  • dullness

  • sensitivity

  • redness

  • excess oiliness

  • or signs of aging

Treatments can come in many forms:

  • serums

  • toners

  • masks

  • exfoliants

  • spot treatments

  • oils

  • and more

The key is understanding that not everybody needs the same routine. Your skin’s needs are unique to you.

And honestly? Skincare is often less about perfection and more about learning how to listen to your skin over time.

Protecting Your Skin Barrier

Moisturizing helps support the skin barrier by sealing in hydration and helping protect the skin from dryness, irritation, and environmental stressors.

One of the biggest skincare lessons I’ve learned on my journey is just how important the skin barrier really is. Your skin barrier helps protect your skin from moisture loss, irritation, and environmental stressors.

When it becomes damaged, your skin may feel:

  • overly dry

  • irritated

  • sensitive

  • tight

  • flaky

  • or inflamed

That’s why moisturizing matters so much.

Products rich in nourishing butters and oils can help support softer, healthier-feeling skin by helping reduce dryness and lock in moisture.

And of course… this is one of the reasons Bare Bear became so special to us in the first place. 💛

And Honestly, Healthy Skin Is Usually Built Slowly

One thing I’m personally learning is that healthy skin comes from consistency, not overnight perfection.

Tiny habits repeated daily often matter more than expensive products or complicated routines.

Drink your water.
Wear your SPF.
Get your sleep.
Cleanse your skin.
Moisturize consistently.
Give your skin patience.

And most importantly:
be gentle with yourself while you learn.
